Sloe Berry

/sləʊ/

This hedgerow fruit is best known for its recreational use with gin but the health benefits have been appreciated for  many generations to fight colds for example as it’s thought to be laden with Vitamin C .  Modern scientists are now investigating medicinal uses for sloes to treat lung disease, arthritis and Crohns disease for example.
I think they are wonderful in baking.  They have a lovely tart flavour so I substitute them in recipes where I see blackberries or blackcurrants.
