The wonderful Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo are back on UK TV screens in their new series Two Greedy Italians Eat Italy. This is only a four part series so I am so glad there is a book to go with it.
The photography – There really is some wondrous imagery in this book – of the food, the authors and the general landscape. It was rather like reading a glossy travel magazine.
The food – I know this is an obvious one but there is a wonderful selection of recipes in this book. Despite being a vegetarian I always look at the meat dishes hoping I’ll see an easy way to adapt them and I’m pleased to say I did. The fish recipes brought back so many memories of travels when I was at University and my honeymoon in Sicily.
The banter – The recipes are divided into those by Gennaro and those by Antonio with lovely banter between them sharing memories of their childhood and visits to Italy. I read this book cover to cover and enjoyed these stories as much as cooking the food.
The botanical descriptions – Throughout the book there are little boxes describing an ingredient and they way it is grown, regarded or cooked in Italy. I really enjoyed these bits – it brought the ingredients to life.
I made my own version of the Orange Rice Cake – a Coconut and Lime version
…as well as Chestnut Gnocchi using cooked chestnuts rather than chestnut flour…
Fish and Potato Bake and Braised Broccoli.
They were all delicious! Read my full review.
The second episode is on BBC2 at 8pm today. If you missed last week’s episode, you can still catch it on iPlayer (UK only).
